Firm Upholstery Foam
Upholstery foam comes in so many different types, densities, and sizes. I have narrowed down my upholstery foam product selection to my most commonly used densities and dimensions.
You can custom cut any option to fit your piece, so make sure it is long enough and wide enough to accommodate any shaping you may have to do
Be sure the size you order is the correct thickness, density, length, and width to meet the needs of your furniture project.
Choosing your density doesn't have to be difficult to wrap your head around. Here is how I typically use them:
Soft Foam
Soft foams are typically never used for seats unless there is a personal preference. Soft foams are great for seat backs and arms, or as toppers for your seat to add softness to the surface.
Medium Foam
Medium firmness upholstery foams are my go to for seats unless the preference is for something firm, in which case I will use firm. You can also use a medium density foam for seat backs and arms.
Firm Foam
Not too many clients will tell you they prefer a nice firm seat. I default to Medium foam because it is nice and taught to the though, and not super stiff and uncomfortable. On the off chance you do make a piece for someone who prefers to sit on a nice hard seat, firm density upholstery foam is the way to go.
Testing your foam
Check the density of your foam by placing your hand palm side down, and spread out on the surface of the foam. Press gently. This most closely mimics the feel when you it on it. Avoid squeezing foam with your fingers to check the density of your upholstery foam. This does not help you to understand how it acts when you sit on it, so is not a great reference for softness or firmness.
